Conserving Diversity at Old Salem and Around the World
Conserving Plant Diversity at Old Salem and Around the World explores why the Gardens of Old Salem are more relevant today than ever. This talk examines how regionally adapted food crops, locally sourced native plants, and long-standing traditions of stewardship contribute to ecological resilience in the Piedmont and beyond.

Drawing on both the historic foundations of Old Salem’s gardens and global experiences in seed-saving and food conservation, the program places Salem’s landscapes within a broader conversation about caring for plant diversity at the local scale.

Through stories, images, and living examples from the gardens, audiences will gain a deeper appreciation for how Old Salem’s gardens function as both a historic resource and a forward-looking model—where seeds, soil, and knowledge are actively stewarded to keep future options alive.

Sliding scale program fee, pay what you can. Pre-registration is required, as space is limited.
