Flower Fireworks

Did you know that there are many different ways to record plants besides photographs and drawings? In this workshop, we will explore some fun ways to start a plant specimen collection. Our garden educators will lead you through a botanical crafting adventure - starting with the natural history of some of our Old Salem species, then choosing a plant specimen, beginning the process to preserve it, and ending with learning how to make Flower Fireworks art using dried plants! If skies are clear, we will practice making cyanotypes with our teaching collection of specimens.

This program involves handling of live and dry plant specimens, including, but not limited to, stems, leaves, and flowers. If you are allergic to plants in the Umbellifer/Apiaceae family, such as carrots, dill, celery, or parsnips, we recommend you do not participate in this program.

The Flower Fireworks program takes place on the grounds of Old Salem Museums & Gardens and will include both an indoor (in the classroom) and an outdoor (venturing into the gardens) portion. The gardens may be wet/muddy. Weather appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended if you choose to join us for this educational crafting adventure at the Garden Education Center! All art materials will be provided, and each attendee will receive their very own plant press and choose their own specimens from our garden.

This workshop is suited for ages 12+. Children under the age of 18 registered for this event must be accompanied by a registered adult. Check-in for this program will be at the Garden Education Center within the Single Brothers' Workshop, 10 W. Academy Street (entrance is through the courtyard gate between the buildings, to the right, and up the ramp). Please arrive 15 minutes prior to allow time for check-in!
