Sounds of Salem: Psalm of Joy

As part of this year’s historic Fourth of July celebration, Old Salem Museums & Gardens is thrilled to collaborate with the Moravian Music Foundation to present a special performance of Psalm of Joy. Originally composed in 1783 by Johann Friedrich Peter, the work premiered in Salem following Governor Alexander Martin’s declaration that July 4th be observed as a day of thanksgiving and peace. On that memorable occasion, Salem residents gathered to share food, fellowship, and celebration—culminating in the first performance of this joyful psalm.

Now, you can experience this powerful piece much as our forebears did more than two centuries ago. Join us at 3:00 p.m. in the Gray Auditorium at the Old Salem Visitor Center and conclude your day of celebration with this remarkable historic performance by the Moramus Choir featuring the 250-year-old Tannenberg Organ. Gather your family and friends and become part of a living tradition as we commemorate 250 years of our nation through music.

Don’t miss this inspiring concert honoring both our local heritage and America’s enduring story.
